with
Cristian Florescu
and
Sonia Dion
teaching dances from Romania
at High/Scope Conference Center
near Clinton, MI, SW of Ann Arbor
May 2-4, 2008
Cristian and Sonia are very entertaining as a teaching couple. They will be teaching
mostly line dances, and possibly one or two couple dances. The material ranges from
the traditional to the more current "manele" style using "Gypsy pop". Their
musical choices are fabulous.
Cristian
Florescu was born in Bucarest, Romania. He has studied dance with
specialists such as Theodor Vasilescu. Cristian was principal dancer
with the National Ensemble Cununa Carpatilor with whom he toured
internationally. He has been recognized by the Romanian government as
a solo dancer and choreographer, and has worked with a number of folk
ensembles in Romania and Moldova. In 1993, he joined Les Sortilèges,
a professional folk dance company based in Montreal where he was
actively involved until 2003 as a dancer, teacher, rehearsal director
and choreographer.
Sonia
Dion was born in Quebec and has been a professional dancer for
over 20 years. She was lead dancer and choreogreapher for Les
Sortilèges Dance Company, Canada's oldest folk dance ensemble
where she developed several new productions. Sonia has toured
worldwide and has been exposed to a wide range of dance techniques.
In recent years, Cristian and Sonia have been sharing their love
of Romanian folk traditions with recreational folk dance groups in
Canada and the United States. Throughout 2005 and 2006, they have
taught workshops in all parts of Canada and the USA and have
choreographed Romanian suites for performing groups including the
world-renowned BYU Folk Dance Ensemble. They have also toured in Taiwan and Japan.
The High/Scope Conference Center
is situated on 450 acres of beautiful
rolling terrain in rural, southeast Michigan.
The Conference Center is a 30 minute drive from Ann Arbor, less than an hour
from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) and one hour north of Toledo.
The facility features two country estates with mansions designed
in the mid-1920s. Dances and workshops are held in the renovated recreation barn.
The houses and barn are within a short walk of each other.
